Overview of Components
The Acropolis Board Game includes a custom game board with imagery representing the city-state of Athens, 4 Acropolis token pieces (Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike, Propylaea), 64 cards (32 Building Cards and 32 Market Cards), and 72 Resource cards (48 Rock tiles and 24 Gold coins). The game also includes a rule book with instructions to play the game.
The game board is made up of six areas: five distinct district areas ” an Agora District, Stadium District, Theatre District, Library/Temple District, and Monuments/Walls District. Each district area has five plots where players will build their monuments in order to gain resources or influence. The sixth area is the central market which contains three plots that can be used to gain resources and build monuments as well.
The player pieces are designed after four iconic Greek monuments ” The Parthenon, the Erechtheion, the Temple of Athena Nike and the monumental entrance Propylaea.
The Building Cards feature project names from Classical Greek civilization such as ‘Piraeus Steel Arms’ or ‘Philosopher Philosophicus’ . Each card features information about what project it represents as well as cost for building that monument in gold or rock tiles. Players, during a typical game of Acropolis, are placed in the roles of true Athenians who are competing to gain political favor and manage the affairs of the city-state. At the start of each turn every player rolls two dice to determine their turn order and also establish what type of card they will draw from from a deck — action cards, resource cards, or even grants from gods! Then players can choose up to two actions such as recruiting new citizens, collecting taxes or levying troops to attack agains other opponents. There are also events on occasion that provide players with opportunities to influence other players by forcing them to take part in certain activities. Each turn strategic thinking and smart decision making is key as there can be wrathful penalties for making poor choices such as incurring debt or going without regular military drills. Ultimately at game’s end whichever player has the most votes wins and is declared leader of the city-state.
